Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten islands off the coast of West Africa. The islands offer long beaches of endless white sand, the historical mystery of colonial style towns and a variety of landscapes from dramatic volcanic to lush and verdant. A pleasant year round climate is another attraction.
The previously uninhabited islands were discovered and colonized by the Portuguese in the fifteenth century). They subsequently became a trading center for African slaves and later an important coaling and re-supply stop for whaling and transatlantic shipping. Independence was achieved in 1975. Most Cape Verdeans have both African and Portuguese antecedents.
